No Sew Cushion Covers

My outdoor patio set had seen better days. They were all ripped from being outside and the fabric was so damaged by the sun they tore when ever anyone sat on them. No sew cushion covers were the solution to my problem, they turned out great and were inexpensive.
I thought I would share this project for all those busy Mom's out there who want to fix or simply want an inexpensive update for their outdoor cushions.
The cushions for my patio set were in awful shape and needed to be fixed. I looked into buying replacements but it would have been upwards of $1000 to get them made, which is more than what I initially paid for the set. Now I could have bought a new set but I like the set and it was only a few years old. The furniture itself is in great condition it was only the cushion fabric that didn't hold up it seemed a shame to replace it.

Before

I decided to take on the task of making new cushion covers. Now I can sew I have an excellent sewing machine and I have sewed cushions before. However with two children three and under running around the house it was proving a challenge for me to find the time to sew new cushions and little kids always seem to get in the way when I take my sewing machine out. So no sew cushions seemed to be the prefect solution to my problem, they turned out looking amazing and this whole project only cost me $65.

  • Outdoor Fabric of your choice
  • Safety Pins

Steps

1. Measure Out Fabric

It is important that you have enough fabric for your project there is nothing worse than getting half way through then noticing that your do not have enough fabric to finish. I needed about 18 yards of fabric for this project, you may need more or less depending on the size of your cushions.

2. Select an Outdoor Fabric

If your furniture spends most of it's time outside as my patio set does it is important that you use an outdoor fabric. You can get an outdoor fabric at your local fabric store, outdoor fabric can be expensive but make sure you check the sale or clearance area as most fabric stores will a selection there. I got all my fabric on clearance for $65.

3. Cover Cushion as if you are Wrapping a Present

Think as each cushion as a present you are wrapping lay your fabric out on the floor and insure there is enough to cover all around. Pull the fabric tight for a nicer look and use safety pins to hold the fabric together. Hid your seems seems at the bottom and the sides of the cushions. Repeat this step for every cushion you want to cover.

Viola! You are all done. This project was inexpensive and only took me a couple of hours to do my entire set perfect for a stay at home Mom. Have fun and enjoy your cushions new look.

I did this as a temporary fix however since doing this project I have gotten two summers out my cushion covers, they still look great and I will use them again for next year. They are holding out better than the original factory cushions that came with them.  Follow me for more at home D.I.Y. projects on a budget.
