Breakfast Nook

No kitchen is complete without a place to eat. If you are looking to install a breakfast nook you can build your own and make your own cushions at little cost. I decided to install a breakfast nook in my kitchen to save on space.

The first step is to pick a spot in your kitchen where you want to put your table. It is important to plan out your breakfast nook and make a drawing of how big you want the bench, table to be and how many chairs you are going to have. In my my case I have my door to the outside with a large window to one side so I planned an L-shaped bench with a smaller table and three chairs.

Next go to the hardware store and purchase the wood you need to build the bench. If you are handy you can cut the wood at home by yourself. If you are not handy or don't have the tools to cut the wood you can measure out the length of the wood before you go to the store and have them cut it for you. I used two by fours for the frame and plywood.

I also put hinges on the top so that it can be opened for extra storage.

Now that the bench is built it it time to make it look pretty. I painted the bench white I did two coats of primer and two coats of white paint. I thought it would be a difficult task with two toddlers walking around but I gave them a paint brush each and took off all their clothes and gave them a spot on to paint. It worked well and other than having to give my kids a bath I got the bench painted without getting paint everywhere.

No bench is complete without cushions now it can be expensive to have cushions made and it can be time consuming to sew your own. As a stay at home I don't have a lot time to spend making new cushions and I don't have a lot of extra cash to have ones made. So I decided to make no sew cushions for the top of the bench. You may be like me and be reluctant of the idea at first but after giving it a try they look great.

To make your no sew cushions first buy and layout the foam for the top. You can buy foam from the fabric store or if your lucky, like me, you can find someone who is throwing away an old couch and get them for free.

The next step is to pick out your fabric I had a couple of options from my personal fabric collection. If you don't have a fabric collection or don't have anything that you like a great place to get fabric is the clearance section at the fabric store. Or they have sell fabric at the thrift store for cheap which is where I got the fabric that I used for this project.

Lay out your fabric and wrap your cushions as if you are wrapping a present. Pull the fabric tight and use safety pins to hold the fabric in place ensuring that all your pins are at the bottom of your cushion.

Now you have lovely cushions for the top of your bench.

That is it the breakfast is nook is done. My family eats on it everyday. Hope you enjoyed this blog thanks for reading. Please subscribe.
